REDD+/Carbon Forestry Projects In Malaysia

Prime Minister announced Malaysia’s NDC update, to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity of GDP by 45%, by 2030, and achieve net-zero GHG emissions by as early as 2050.

For the transition to net zero GHG emissions, mitigation approaches such as switching to renewable energy, bioenergy, sustainable forest management and REDD+ programmes should be adopted in Malaysia.

Deforestation and forest degradation is one of the major contributors to GHG emissions, accounting for 25% of the total emissions.

As a part of their mitigation approach, Malaysia should embark on REDD+ with the aim of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, while sustainably managing forests and enhancing forest carbon stocks.

Benefits OF REDD-Plus

The REDD+ approach offers a broad range of benefits in terms of social, economic and environmental benefits to Malaysia and to the local communities in and around forested areas.

Forests provide valuable benefits and services including carbon storage, water regulation, soil protection, non-timber forest products including food and fibre, climate regulation, and biodiversity habitat.

Malaysia also stands to benefit in terms of results-based payments for verified emissions reductions for programmes and initiatives that meet UNFCCC REDD+ requirements.

COMPLETE PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION FOR REDD+

FEASIBILITY ASSESSMENT

To Identify activities that can fall under REDD plus and identify relevant carbon methodologies required for the development of project design document. Gap analysis will also be carried out based on the available documents and data.

PROJECT DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

To develop the project design document which describes the general strategy, project options for demonstration of additionality, methodologies, barrier analysis and calculation of carbon credits.

VALIDATION

To assist project developers to appoint a validation/ verification body to validate the project document basis the adopted methodology

MONITORING REPORT

To conduct quantitative assessment of key indicators and data collection for Forest Inventories and emission factors. Project monitoring report will be developed based on the above information.

SUPPORT IN ISSUANCE OF CREDITS

To assist project developers with verified carbon units (VCU) issuance. Credits deposited into their account may be held, sold or retired.

SELLING OF CARBON CREDITS

To assist the project developer in selling of excess carbon credits.
